Nabagereka and her dedicated team engaged in the Mental Health Charity Program
Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda launched a fundraising campaign named the Nabagereka Fund to assist people with mental disorders in Uganda.
The fundraising event, known as the Queen’s Ball, took place at Serena Hotel Kampala and was attended by various dignitaries, officials, community leaders, and representatives from different organisations.
In his speech to the participants at the fundraising dinner aimed at collecting money to assist individuals with mental disorders, the Katikkiro said, "The most precious gift is life. Human beings are unique from other creatures because of the brain, which enables us to understand what is important to us and to distinguish between right and wrong."
He continued, "The brain enables us to control other creatures, and for that reason, the brain is one of the most important parts of our body. The issue of mental illness affects the way our brain distinguishes the issues we encounter so that we can know what to do, how much to do it, and where to do it."
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, the Katikkiro, and the Speaker of the Buganda Assembly were also in attendance
He said, "The struggle we are on is to bring Buganda back to the top, and it needs people with good health, especially those with a healthy mind, to do what is good and constructive for them, to take care of their families, and to benefit the communities where they live."
He noted that in countries like Uganda, which are still developing, there is a limited scientific understanding to address many diseases that afflict us. Moreover, in Uganda and other African countries, individuals with mental illness are often perceived as bewitched or believed to be influenced by ancestral spirits.
We hope that this program, initiated by the Nnaabagereka, will enable us to delve deeper into mental illness, identify its causes, and find the appropriate treatment for it.
