Students have been urged to make use of all opportunities that come their way while still in school, in order to prepare for a bright future.

These remarks were made by Mr. Kyozira Peter, the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Co-Curricular Activities and Student Affairs at the Ministry of Education and Sports, while officiating at the public speaking competitions and closing the extracurricular calendar at MUMSA High School, Mityana.

The competitions were organized in three categories — Lower Secondary (S.1 & S.2), Middle Secondary (S.3 & S.4), and Upper Secondary (S.5 & S.6) — with four school houses taking part: Bemba, Jjunju, Kimera, and Kintu.

Kintu House emerged winner of the public speaking competition with 558 points, followed by Jjunju and Kimera, who tied with 542 points each, while Bemba came fourth with 537 points.

On the same day, students raised a total of UGX 3,806,900 to buy certificates in support of Buganda Kingdom programs. Jjunju House contributed the highest amount with 1,231,500 shillings, followed by Kintu with 740,000, Kimera with 710,000, and Bemba with 405,400.

At the end of the school year, Jjunju House — which had accumulated the highest overall score across activities such as football, netball, volleyball, music, dance and drama, athletics, essay writing, public speaking, and fundraising for Buganda certificates — was awarded a shield, a trophy, and one million shillings.

In the overall standings, Jjunju House emerged top with 276.1 points. They were followed by Bemba with 230 points, Kimera with 224.4 points, and Kintu with 218.6 points.

The Head Teacher of MUMSA High School and Buganda Minister for Local Government and Lukiiko Tours, Hon. Joseph Kawuki, used the event to emphasize the importance of every student discovering their talents and making the most of the opportunities provided by the school to nurture them.

He also called upon the Ministry of Education to revisit Uganda’s curriculum policies, particularly to strike a balance between compulsory subjects and those often overlooked, such as agriculture, foreign languages, and computer studies — subjects which he said prepare learners for practical life.

Owek. Kawuki further urged government to expand programs like State House sponsorships to ensure equal opportunities for learners across the country, and to improve the district quota admissions scheme.

He concluded by calling on government to ensure that every school has at least two strong extracurricular programs to support the holistic development of students.
