Owek. Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, smartly dressed and smiling, celebrates 12 years of dedicated service
Today, 12th May 2025, marks 12 years since His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II appointed Charles Peter Mayiga as Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda. The appointment, made on 12th May 2013, entrusted him with the duty of serving the Kabaka and his people as the fifth Katikkiro under the Kabaka’s reign.
Charles Peter Mayiga succeeded Owek. John Baptist Walusimbi.
In his message to the Kabaka’s subjects, Katikkiro Mayiga said:
“We thank God who has enabled us to reach this day.”
Over the past 12 years, the Katikkiro has implemented a progressive leadership strategy based on the Five Key Pillars adopted by the Buganda Lukiiko (Parliament):
- Preserving, strengthening, and safeguarding the Throne
- Advocating for federal governance
- Protecting Buganda’s land and boundaries
- Promoting economic self-reliance
- Fostering unity

As part of these efforts, Katikkiro Mayiga has upheld the dignity of the throne, including the restoration of royal sites such as Bamunanika, Kireka, and the royal drum site.
The “Ettoffaali” fundraising drive
The Katikkiro launched the “Ettoffaali” campaign, traveling extensively across Buganda’s counties—both inland and on islands—within Uganda and abroad. These tours allowed him to assess the wellbeing of the Kabaka’s people and share Kingdom updates.
During these visits, citizens contributed funds known as Ettoffaali, which helped complete the Masengere building.

Restoration of the Kasubi Royal Tombs
Through the same initiative, Buganda raised funds to restore the Kasubi Royal Tombs, which were destroyed by fire in 2010. Katikkiro Mayiga has repeatedly emphasized that the reconstruction follows cultural and traditional guidelines.
