Mrs. Louise Haxthausen, UNESCO’s Regional Director for Eastern Africa, was warmly received by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Hon. Charles Peter Mayiga.

The Katikkiro briefed her on Buganda’s cultural heritage and historical sites, including the ongoing restoration of the Kasubi Royal Tombs — explaining how the work is being carried out, the challenges encountered, and progress towards completion.

He thanked UNESCO for supporting this project, along with other countries that have partnered with the Kingdom.

“We are pleased that even people outside our borders recognize the importance of our heritage. Once the Kasubi Tombs are fully restored, our cultural treasures will be even better appreciated, especially by distinguished visitors,” said Hon. Mayiga.

Mrs. Haxthausen commended the Kingdom for its dedication to preserving Buganda’s culture and history. On behalf of UNESCO, she praised the Kingdom’s commitment and efforts to promote and safeguard its cultural heritage.

Following the meeting, the delegation visited the Kasubi Royal Tombs to observe the ongoing restoration work and gain further understanding of the historical significance of the site.
