The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, has challenged the latest cohort of graduates from Muteesa I Royal University (MRU) to use their academic achievements not only to uplift their own lives, but also to transform the communities they come from.
Speaking at the university’s 13th graduation ceremony held at its main campus in Kirumba, Masaka, the Katikkiro delivered a strong message on self-reliance and collective responsibility.
“Use the knowledge you have acquired to lift yourselves out of hardship,” he urged the graduates. “Lift your communities as well, and raise others as you rise into positions of influence.”
A Call for Innovation and Perseverance
The ceremony, marked by cultural performances and tradition, also featured a keynote address from the Chancellor, Justice Julia Ssebutinde. Reflecting on the transition from academia to the professional world, she cautioned graduates that the job market presents significant challenges, but emphasized that failure is only permanent for those who surrender their determination.
“Do not allow any challenge to drain your strength,” the Chancellor advised. “The world of work is filled with obstacles, but those who confront setbacks with creativity and persistence will ultimately prevail.”

Health and Character: Foundations of Success
Buganda’s Minister for Education, Owek. Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, underscored the importance of discipline and personal well-being as essential pillars of a successful career. She specifically warned young people to remain vigilant about health risks that could undermine their future.
“Prioritize your health as you embark on the next phase of your journey toward success,” she said, urging graduates to avoid HIV/AIDS and other life-altering risks that could jeopardize their promising futures.
She also commended parents for their role in supporting and nurturing the graduates, while reminding them that their guidance remains crucial. Parents were encouraged to continue offering oversight to ensure their children do not falter during this critical transition into full adulthood.
Expansion and New Leadership
The 13th graduation comes at a significant moment for Muteesa I Royal University. The institution is implementing plans to strengthen its campuses at Kakeeka–Mengo and Kirumba–Masaka, aimed at increasing enrollment while maintaining high academic standards aligned with international benchmarks.
